Evidence based medicine

GastroPanel promotes evidence based medicine

Diagnosis of disease of the stomach mucosal membrane has until now only been possible with Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) tests and medicine trials ("Test and Treat strategy"), and with limited endoscopy resources. Based on the current knowledge, it can be concluded that GastroPanel examination promotes evidence based medicine as follows:

1.     In the diagnostics and treatment of functional and organic dyspepsia, H. pylori infection, atrophic gastritis and related risks (gastric cancer, peptic ulcer disease, deficiency of vitamin B12, iron, calcium and zinc).
2.     Follow-up of the success of the treatment of H. pylori and atrophic gastritis.
3.     Follow-up and identification of the risks related to atrophic gastritis, which often causes only mild or no symptoms. Follow-up of atrophic gastritis caused by H. pylori allows treatment that is correctly timed and safe. This enables reduction in unnecessary medication, costs and side effects.
4.     Estimation of the risk of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and its complication, Barrett’s esophagus.

Eradication treatment of H. pylori may result in the healing of atrophic gastritis, and is therefore strongly recommended. GastroPanel gives the opportunity to identify, with a blood sample, those patients who have an increased risk of gastric cancer or peptic ulcer disease, and who therefore need to be directed to further tests and treatment. The “Test and Treat” strategy does not advice treatment of atrophic gastritis and prevention of the related risks, such as early gastric cancer, which in most cases is treatable.

GastroPanel examination can solve serious medical and ethical problems in the treatment practice of H. pylori infection and dyspepsia symptoms when used in the basic health care as a “Test and Treat” method.

GastroView

GastroView is best used instead of GastroPanel in those situations, where taking a fasting blood sample, or where timely handling, freezing or testing of the blood sample is difficult. GastroView gives the same information as GastroPanel except for antrum-related information on the antrum part of stomach mucosa. GastroView promotes evidence based medicine as follows:
